ふだんの生活で、ぼくたちは日々、目を通したいわゆる視覚情報に晒されている。 もちろん、耳や鼻や皮膚などにある様々なセンサーを通しても、環境を認識しているわけだけれど、その中でも、目からの情報は膨大で、圧倒的に思える。活字を読むのも、ネットを見るのも、主に視覚情報を通じてだ。 そして、ぼくたちの視覚には「色」がある。赤だとか緑だとか青だとかを区別できるというのは、ただ明るい暗い（明暗）だけを識別するよりも、便利なことが多いし、しばしば、「美」を感じるきっかけにもなる。情緒的な言い方にすぎるかもしれないが、色覚があるからこそ、世界は彩りにあふれて、美しい。 実は色覚について、強い関心を持ってきた。小説の中でも、特異な視覚を持った一族を登場させたことがある（『天空の約束』と『雲の王』）。もっと知識を深めたいと思っていたところ、東京大学の柏の葉キャンパスに、色覚をめぐって幅広く、かつ、深く追究して
